In a recent development, the Houston Texans have waived kicker Matt Ammendola, who missed a critical last-minute field goal. The decision comes after the Texans acquired defensive end Derek Barnett on waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles, necessitating a roster move.
The Texans faced a kicking dilemma after long-time kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn was placed on injured reserve due to a quad injury suffered in their dramatic 37-39 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To fill the void, the Texans turned to Matt Ammendola, an undrafted kicker from Oklahoma State who has had stints with the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Arizona Cardinals before joining the Texans.
Ammendola’s performance with the Texans has been inconsistent, hitting only 50% of his field goals during his current stint, and failing to convert any attempts beyond 50 yards. Despite this, reports suggest that the Texans are considering re-signing Ammendola to their practice squad rather than immediately seeking a replacement.
After a memorable field goal attempt against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12, where he narrowly missed a potential game-winning kick, it appears that Ammendola may not face stiff competition for his services. The Texans will likely assess their kicking options and decide whether to continue with Ammendola or explore other alternatives as they navigate the remainder of the season.
