The Miami Dolphins are set to sign veteran pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul off the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Pierre-Paul, a South Florida native, made his debut with the Saints against the Falcons on Sunday but will now join the Dolphins.
Despite the Saints having the option to sign Pierre-Paul to their active roster and block the Dolphins’ move, they have chosen not to do so. This move by Miami comes in response to the Achilles tear suffered by Jaelan Phillips, who was leading the team with 6.5 sacks.
Pierre-Paul, a two-time Super Bowl winner, expressed earlier this month that he had no intention of retiring and aimed to join a contender. The Saints, currently enduring their sixth loss, allowed Pierre-Paul to join his hometown team, which is pursuing its first AFC East crown since 2008.
The Dolphins will need to keep Pierre-Paul on their 53-man roster for at least three weeks after grabbing him from the Saints’ practice squad. The move is likely a strategic response to the loss of Phillips, with Pierre-Paul expected to play a rotational role in the Dolphins’ edge defender lineup.
Throughout his career, Pierre-Paul has accumulated 94.5 sacks and 21 forced fumbles. He played a key role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ pass rush alongside Shaq Barrett during their Super Bowl-winning season in 2020. The Dolphins will look to leverage Pierre-Paul’s experience and pass-rushing prowess as they continue their push for a playoff spot.
