Eagles make decision on pursuit of Shaq Leonard amid cowboys rumors

The latest speculations surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles involve their pursuit of three-time Pro Bowler Shaq Leonard. Currently meeting with the Dallas Cowboys on November 28, 2023, Leonard’s potential visit with the Eagles remains uncertain. While the Cowboys are in contention to sign him during their meeting, the Eagles are reportedly interested in securing a visit with the star defender, as per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter’s tweet on November 28 stated, “Free-agent three-time All-Pro LB Shaquille Leonard is visiting today [November 28] with the Dallas Cowboys and, in the words of a source, ‘should be visiting later this week’ with the Philadelphia Eagles.” However, Dianna Russini from The Athletic contradicted this, noting that there is currently no scheduled visit with the Eagles. The Eagles are hopeful for a meeting, but it depends on Leonard not finalizing a deal during his Dallas visit. Other teams are also engaging in discussions with Leonard’s camp about potential interest.

Cowboys 'definitely' have interest in Shaq Leonard

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the Eagles’ interest in Leonard. Initially, CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson stated that there was no prior interest from the Eagles. However, due to linebacker Zach Cunningham’s hamstring injury, Anderson later updated her reporting, indicating an “increasing interest” from the Eagles in pursuing Leonard.

In the race to secure Leonard, the Eagles face challenges, including Leonard’s first visit being with their rival, the Cowboys. Assuming Leonard’s health checks out, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may push for an immediate deal. Additionally, the Cowboys possess more remaining cap space than the Eagles in a potential bidding war for Leonard.

However, the financial aspect may not play a significant role in Leonard’s decision. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned that Leonard is likely to start on the practice squad at his next destination, with the deal being similar regardless of the team. Despite the Eagles having limited cap space compared to the Cowboys, it remains to be seen how this factor will impact Leonard’s ultimate decision.
