Former Premier League referee makes major red card claim after Sunderland’s defeat at Plymouth

A former Premier League referee has asserted that Sunderland experienced a critical refereeing mistake during their 2-0 loss to Plymouth. Chris Foy, who analyzes decisions across the EFL weekends for Sky Sports’ ref watch feature, highlighted that forward Luke Cundle was fortunate to only receive a yellow card for a challenge that he believed endangered Sunderland’s full back, Trai Hume, in the 26th minute. Referee James Bell initially played an advantage for Sunderland but later returned to show Cundle a yellow card. This incident could have been a pivotal moment in the game as Plymouth was leading 1-0 at that time. Furthermore, Cundle proceeded to assist Finn Azaz, who scored, doubling Plymouth’s lead just before halftime.

“Although this is a difficult one to spot in real-time, I think the Plymouth Argyle player is fortunate to have only received a yellow card for this challenge,” he stated.

“The challenge is late, with a high point of contact, and is made with speed, force, and intensity, endangering the opponent’s safety.” The tackle is made with exposed studs that go into the Sunderland player’s leg above the ankle, causing the ankle to buckle. These are the variables that a referee will evaluate when deciding whether there has been major foul play (red card) or simply careless behavior (yellow card).

In my opinion, the best solution would have been to show the Plymouth Argyle player a red card for major foul play.”

Sunderland return to Championship action on Wednesday night when they host Huddersfield Town at the Stadium of Light.
