Eric Stokes redux: Packers’ speedy CB designated to return from IR.
The Packers’ third-year cornerback and former first-round pick, Eric Stokes, returned to practice on Monday after enduring a challenging 385 days. Stokes faced setbacks such as a torn meniscus and Lisfranc injury last season, followed by a hamstring issue during his recovery, delaying his 2023 season debut. Initially placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list, he finally played on October 22 but suffered another hamstring injury, leading to his move to injured reserve.
After missing the last five games, Stokes rejoined practice on day 386. The Packers now have a 21-day window to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster or keep him on the sidelines. Head coach Matt LaFleur expressed confidence in Stokes, praising his positive attitude and team spirit.
Stokes’ return poses a challenge for defensive coordinator Joe Barry, given the changes in the secondary since Stokes was last active. The Packers traded Rasul Douglas, and Jaire Alexander has battled injuries, with a recent shoulder issue affecting his availability. Carrington Valentine, a seventh-round rookie, has stepped up in Stokes’ absence, impressing with his performance.
Despite the possibility of Stokes playing against the Kansas City Chiefs, caution is advised to avoid further setbacks. The Packers may opt to gradually reintegrate him into the lineup, considering the 10-day gap between games. The decision on Stokes’ roster status must be made by December 18, following the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
