Newcastle manager Eddie Howe describes Sandro Tonali as a’strong character’ despite the fact that the last few months have been’very challenging for him.’
The Italian midfielder has been suspended for ten months as a result of a betting scandal, meaning he will not be eligible for selection for Newcastle until August 2024.
The Magpies face PSG in a critical Champions League match tonight, and Howe updated Sky Sport Italia on the former Milan midfielder.
“A really strong character in recent weeks.” It’s been challenging for him, and we don’t minimize the task he faces; when you’re not available to play for an extended length of time, you have to train at a high level,” Howe said.
“It’s not easy to stay motivated during that time, but he’s done a great job so far.” He’s been great among the other players, encouraging and supporting them. I’m disappointed that he won’t be available tonight because he’s been quite helpful, but we must deal with the circumstance.”
Tonali joined Newcastle from Milan last summer in a transaction worth around €80 million including add-ons.
He scored on his debut with Newcastle in August and appeared in 12 Premier League games this season before the FIGC ban took effect.
Tonali won one Serie A championship with Milan in 2021-22, scoring seven goals in 130 appearances over a three-year period at the Stadio Meazza. The 23-year-old made his senior Italy debut in October 2019 and has played 15 times for the Azzurri.
