The Braves, led by Alex Anthopoulos, are actively exploring options to bolster their pitching staff this offseason. While initial talks involved Aaron Nola and Sonny Gray, who later signed with the Cardinals, the team is now eyeing the trade market. Among potential targets like Shane Bieber and Corbin Burnes, Dylan Cease of the White Sox stands out as a linked option.
Dylan Cease, a pitcher of Cy Young-caliber with multiple years of control, could significantly enhance the Braves’ starting rotation alongside Spencer Strider and Max Fried. This formidable trio, backed by Charlie Morton as the potential fourth starter in playoffs, could create the strongest rotation in baseball. Kiley McDaniel of ESPN is among those who advocate for such a trade, envisioning a powerhouse rotation, a top-tier bullpen, and a historically powerful lineup.
The Braves have been strategically creating roster space and financial flexibility, initially rumored to be for Nola or Gray. However, Cease, a Georgia native, now emerges as a possible target. The Braves seem hesitant to acquire a rental pitcher, and Cease’s two years of control align with their needs. While the farm system might be just sufficient for the deal, it could be a close call, potentially involving three of the top five prospects. The Orioles and San Diego are also mentioned as possible trade partners, with the Braves having the assets to entice the White Sox.
Despite the speculation, the decision ultimately rests with Alex Anthopoulos, who faces the challenge of making a substantial move without guarantees of extending Cease. The Braves, contrary to common belief, possess the necessary pieces to intrigue the White Sox, with prospects like A.J. Smith-Shawver, Hurston Waldrep, Vaughn Grissom, and others potentially catching Chicago’s attention. The prospect of parting with these assets, however, remains a significant consideration for Anthopoulos, especially without assurances of a long-term commitment from Cease.
Atlanta has joined the Dodgers and several others who are engaged in trade talks with the Chicago White Sox for ace Dylan Cease.
