Mark Venus has revealed whether Tony Mowbray will be in charge of Sunderland for tonight’s game.
During the pre-game press conference, the assistant coach stated that he was ‘hopeful’ that the manager will return this evening. Tony Mowbray has been a constant on the Sunderland bench this season, while Mark Venus has spent much of the last 20 years with his old Ipswich Town teammate.
However, after confirming that Mowbray was suffering from a chest ailment, the 56-year-old may be forced to take command on his own tonight. Venus presided over yesterday’s press conference in the absence of the manager, but she is certain they will reconvene in the dugout against Huddersfield Town.
“We’re hoping he’ll be able to take charge tomorrow,” Venus told the journalists.
“He has a chest infection, but I believe he will be there; we obviously need him.” We know how he wants to work and what he wants, so it hasn’t had a big impact on the build up and preparation. If he isn’t there, it won’t be for lack of effort, but we’re optimistic.”
Tony Mowbray works excellently with our youthful players, therefore his absence from tonight’s Championship encounter will be a significant loss.
We can also expect a few changes to the starting lineup, with newcomers turning to the boss for guidance as they attempt to bounce back from a humiliating defeat to Plymouth. Mark Venus, on the other hand, is a very experienced coach who will be well prepared if he is forced to take command on his own. It might also mean that Dan Neil and Luke O’Nien step up even more.
How important is Tony Mowbray to what Sunderland are trying to do?
Mowbray’s possible absence may demonstrate to some how vital the 60-year-old is to this team.
Because of the team’s recent results, several fans have taken to social media to express their displeasure with Mowbray and if he should be fired.
While we are undoubtedly going through a difficult period, considering letting him go is just insane. Without Mowbray, this youthful squad would be nothing like as good as it is now. He is responsible for transforming so many inexperienced young athletes into sought-after stars.
If you asked the Sunderland team if Mowbray is the right man for the job, every single one of them would answer yes. He is well-liked, and it is absurd to suppose that any other individual could do better.
