On Tuesday, Newcastle were denied a memorable victory at the Parc des Princes when Kwiatkowski interfered with a controversial handball call against Tino Livramento.

Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot in the 98th minute, leaving Newcastle requiring a win in their last group game against AC Milan on December 13th. Kieran Trippier, reacting to the sense of unfairness in Paris, called on officials to explain themselves to the media.

“It’s one of those where I’m standing here, discussing the decisions but why can’t officials?” that’s what he said.

“Why can’t the referee come out and explain why he gave that penalty, for example, just to give all the fans, the media, and yourself a clearer indication of why he gave the penalty?”

“Players get stuck here and answer questions, but officials can’t?” It’s not talked about enough.”

Newcastle’s players, according to Trippier, tried to find out why referee Szymon Marciniak awarded the injury-time penalty but received no explanation. Then he went on to propose a more radical solution to the problem.
