Reason why Joe Mazzulla apologizes to Chicago Bulls revealed

Joe Mazzulla apologizes to Bulls center after intentional fouls.

The Celtics successfully advanced to the knockout stages of the in-season tournament, defying odds against the Bulls. Requiring a 23-point victory and a Nets win over the Raptors to force a three-way tie, the Celtics secured a 124-97 win, coupled with the Nets’ success. Despite holding a 35-point lead, Coach Joe Mazzulla employed unconventional tactics, keeping starters in late and intentionally fouling Andre Drummond in a Hack-a-Drummond strategy.

The strategy aimed to exploit Drummond’s free-throw struggles, as Mazzulla instructed Jrue Holiday to foul him, resulting in Drummond missing all four attempts. Mazzulla, acknowledging the necessity of the move, expressed regret but emphasized its role in securing the best chance of advancement. The Celtics will now face the Pacers in the quarterfinals on the road.

During the fourth quarter, Mazzulla and Bulls coach Billy Donovan conversed, with Mazzulla explaining the circumstances and the need to closely monitor the Nets vs. Raptors game for favorable results. Donovan, while expressing discomfort with putting Drummond in such a position during a blowout loss, acknowledged the adherence to NBA rules and the significance of the league’s point differential system.

Donovan mentioned his understanding of Mazzulla’s approach, recognizing the broader context of the league’s decisions in implementing the point differential rule. Despite the unconventional strategies and discussions during the game, both coaches acknowledged the overarching framework set by the NBA for the tournament, ultimately guiding the Celtics to the next stage of competition.
