An NFC team has reportedly engaged in internal discussions regarding the potential return of Jim Harbaugh to the NFL. Recent rumors suggest that the Chicago Bears might consider Harbaugh if he expresses interest in leaving his position at Michigan.
Dianna Russini, a reporter from The Athletic, revealed on FS1’s “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd that the Chicago Bears have internally discussed the prospect of bringing in Harbaugh. The team’s decisions regarding its current coaching staff and quarterback situation will likely influence whether they pursue Harbaugh. According to Russini, Harbaugh’s respected reputation in NFL circles and the ownership’s keen interest in his potential contributions could fuel ongoing discussions, especially as the NFL regular season approaches its conclusion.
The Bears, led by head coach Matt Eberflus in his second season, have faced challenges with a 4-8 record and are out of playoff contention. Speculation suggests that the team might opt for a complete rebuild by parting ways with Eberflus and quarterback Justin Fields. In such a scenario, Harbaugh, known for his successful coaching record, could emerge as an attractive candidate. His previous accomplishments, including a 44-19-1 record with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014, including leading them to the NFC Championship three consecutive years and the Super Bowl in 2012, further bolster his appeal.
Harbaugh’s history with the Bears, having been drafted by the team in 1987 and spending the initial seven years of his NFL career in Chicago, adds a layer of connection. Additionally, the fact that Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren formerly served as the commissioner of the Big Ten makes the situation noteworthy.
While Harbaugh has considered an NFL return in the past two seasons, this time may be distinctive due to potential challenges at Michigan, including a potential lengthy suspension. Despite this, Harbaugh remains open to discussions, with recent reports even suggesting that he is the gambling favorite to land with a different NFL team.
