The Boston Celtics, despite their strong 14-4 record leading the Eastern Conference, are actively exploring options in the trade market. Recent reports indicate that the team is considering a trade for Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard John Konchar, with the aim of bolstering their shooting capabilities off the bench.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, John Konchar, a reserve forward for the Grizzlies, is a potential trade candidate before the February trade deadline. The Celtics, along with the Warriors and Lakers, are among the teams keeping an eye on Konchar’s situation.
While not a widely recognized name, Konchar has accumulated NBA experience, having been with the Grizzlies for the past five seasons. During the 2022-23 season, he posted career-high averages of 20.8 minutes and 5.1 points per game. However, with the Grizzlies facing challenges such as injuries and a 25-game suspension for star player Ja Morant, Konchar’s role on the team is expected to diminish once the team regains full health.
For the Celtics, adding a bench shooter with decent size and experience like Konchar could be beneficial. While the 27-year-old may not command extensive playing time, he could contribute in a smaller role. Notably, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has shown a preference for players who have performed well against his team in the past. Konchar notably recorded his first triple-double during a game against the Celtics last season, which could be a factor in Boston’s interest.
It’s worth mentioning that the Celtics and Grizzlies engaged in significant trade activity earlier in the offseason, with Boston sending point guard Marcus Smart to Memphis in a surprising three-team trade. Although Smart is currently recovering from an injury, he is expected to be healthy when the Celtics face Memphis on Sunday, February 4th. The potential acquisition of Konchar adds an intriguing dynamic to the ongoing relationship between the two teams.
