Falcons’ standout inside linebacker, Nate Landman, was absent from Wednesday’s practice due to a thigh injury sustained in the previous game against the New Orleans Saints. Despite Falcons coach Arthur Smith downplaying the severity of the injury, the team opted to reinforce their inside linebacker depth by signing Frank Ginda to the practice squad, according to Terrin Waack, a team reporter.
Ginda, the former USFL Defensive Player of the Year, has familiarity with the Falcons, having joined them in August. Although he played in two preseason games, accumulating 12 total tackles, he was cut before the regular season. His return to Atlanta serves as a contingency plan, especially if Landman is unable to play in the upcoming game against the New York Jets.
The Falcons were already grappling with a thin inside linebacker roster following Troy Andersen’s placement on injured reserve due to a pectoral injury requiring potentially season-ending surgery after just three games. Andersen, a former second-round pick, was anticipated to form a crucial partnership with Kaden Elliss as the starting inside linebackers. However, Andersen’s absence led to Landman’s unexpected rise to prominence.
Despite going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft, Landman has exceeded expectations, starting in nine out of 11 games and amassing impressive statistics, including 73 tackles, four for a loss, four quarterback hits, two sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. Landman currently ranks third on the team in tackles, showcasing his impact since stepping into the starting role.
In addition to Landman’s absence, running back Cordarrelle Patterson and Calais Campbell were non-participants in practice due to rest days. Receiver Mack Hollins and left tackle Jake Matthews were limited, while cornerback Mike Hughes participated fully.
The Falcons are gearing up to face the New York Jets on the road at MetLife Stadium this Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
