Callum Wilson shares the ‘brutal’ truth about what his relationship with Alexander Isak is really like

Newcastle United boasts a formidable attacking force when their squad is at full strength, with the presence of two top-tier strikers in Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

Initially possessing the impressive goal-scoring prowess of Wilson, the Magpies further strengthened their striking options by acquiring Isak in August 2022, breaking their transfer record in the process. However, the pair have had limited opportunities to play together as manager Eddie Howe has strategically rotated them, extracting the best performances from both players.

Their contributions were instrumental in Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League. Wilson experienced his most successful season in a Newcastle shirt, while Isak, despite an injury-marred debut season, managed to net 10 goals.

The beginning of the 2023/24 season has seen both Isak and Wilson shine brightly. Wilson has tallied seven goals, with Isak leading the charge with nine.

Isak’s recent goal-scoring exploits occurred notably against Chelsea and PSG, during a period when Wilson was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Wilson is eager to return to training soon, fueled by the desire to regain form, especially given Isak’s impressive recent performances.

Callum Wilson speaks honestly about his relationship with Alexander Isak

In the recent installment of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson delved into his dynamic with Isak, shedding light on how they mutually benefit each other’s performances. He highlighted, “For me personally, witnessing Alex score during a game at St James’ Park, for instance, serves as a source of motivation.”

He elaborated, emphasizing the importance of a striking partner’s success in elevating one’s own game, stating, “When someone in your role performs admirably and rightfully so, it’s essential. You require someone to deliver goals when you’re not on the field to compete.”

Wilson emphasized that rather than feeling indifferent when Isak scores, it sparks a different reaction. He clarified, “It’s almost more frustrating, and I won’t pretend that I’m not affected when Alex scores. It’s not a situation where I’m unconcerned. Instead, I harness it positively, using it as a driving force for my own motivation.”

Highlighting the foundation of their strong rapport, Wilson emphasized, “This mutual push is why our relationship, both on and off the pitch, is so strong. We’re constantly urging each other to excel.”

“But I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t motivate you to work harder in rehab.” That’s me being completely honest, and if I said anything other, everyone would think I’m lying.”

The Newcastle duo make each other better

A healthy competitive spirit between Isak and Wilson is proving to be advantageous for Newcastle. Their drive to score goals stems from the intense competition for a spot in Eddie Howe’s starting lineup.

Howe’s adept management has allowed both players to complement each other effectively, ensuring they both hold equally vital roles within the team structure.

Wilson’s sentiments are entirely understandable and reasonable. Witnessing Isak’s success serves as motivation for him to accelerate his recovery. It would indeed be unusual if Wilson’s mindset were anything other than a desire to return stronger, rather than a relaxed approach of ‘Alex is performing well, so I can take my time recuperating.’

Wilson is eager to make a swift return to action, aiming to narrow the gap in the scoring charts. Although Isak currently holds a two-goal advantage, the 24-year-old Wilson aims to reduce or potentially surpass that lead in the upcoming match against Manchester United on Saturday night.
