One analyst suggests that the Buffalo Bills might significantly bolster their offense with a late-season addition.
Zach Ertz, a seasoned tight end, became available after requesting and receiving a release from the Arizona Cardinals, subsequently passing through waivers.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Ertz is keen on joining a competitive team. While a return to the Philadelphia Eagles remains a strong possibility, Schefter specifically highlighted the Bills as a team worth monitoring.
Schefter’s statement on the situation was, “Zach Ertz, the former Cardinals’ TE, has cleared waivers today and is now free to sign with any team, according to a source. The Eagles, a team where Ertz needs 11 catches to surpass Harold Carmichael and become their all-time leading receiver, are anticipated to show interest in bringing him back.”
Ertz is aiming to join a championship contender, with potential suitors including the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and notably, the Buffalo Bills.
Zach Ertz Offers ‘Experience and Production’
As highlighted by NFL.com, Ertz experienced a diminishing role in the Cardinals’ offense as rookie tight end Trey McBride started receiving more targets. With Ertz’s departure from Arizona, he now has the opportunity to join a competitive team where he might secure a more prominent position.
The analysis pointed out that as McBride began performing exceptionally well in recent weeks, it became evident that Ertz might not feature in the Cardinals’ future plans beyond 2023. Given the Cardinals’ low standing in the league at 2-10, Ertz opted to pursue opportunities with a playoff contender during the final six weeks of the regular season.

The report emphasized that Ertz brings valuable experience and productivity to any team in need of a threat at the tight end position.
Further indications suggest the Buffalo Bills’ interest in Ertz. According to Bleacher Report insider Jordan Schultz, the Bills are one of four teams “in the mix” for Ertz, alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, and Baltimore Ravens.
Bills Could Get Tight End Back Soon
The Buffalo Bills may see the return of one of their key tight ends following an extended period of injury. Dawson Knox, who underwent wrist surgery and was subsequently placed on injured reserve, could potentially rejoin the lineup following the team’s bye week.
In a statement shared by The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia on X, Coach Sean McDermott expressed optimism but also caution, stating that they are “hopeful but not certain” regarding Dawson Knox’s return ahead of the Week 14 Chiefs game, following the team’s bye week.
Knox’s performance had been underwhelming before his injury, having only made 15 receptions for 105 yards and a single touchdown across seven games. Buscaglia highlighted how Knox had struggled to resume his role as a primary target for quarterback Josh Allen.
Despite being a pivotal figure in the Bills’ offense in recent years and securing a long-term contract extension, Knox encountered a sluggish start to the 2023 season. Buscaglia noted his career-low average of 6.8 yards per catch and highlighted Knox’s challenges with drops, suggesting that the wrist injury might have contributed to some of these missed opportunities.
