Browns in ‘Wait-And-See’ Mode on Future of $100 Million Defender

The Cleveland Browns are closely monitoring the status of cornerback Denzel Ward, who is currently sidelined due to a shoulder injury. Ward, a crucial component of the Browns’ historically formidable defense, is set to miss his second consecutive game against the Los Angeles Rams. The team is adopting a “wait-and-see” approach regarding his availability in the upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to insights from Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, there is a possibility of structural damage in Ward’s injured shoulder. Despite this concern, the Browns are optimistic that he won’t be out for an extended period. Cabot mentioned in her Q&A column that while Ward will miss the Rams game, his status for the Jaguars game remains undetermined, pending his progress during the week.

In Ward’s absence, the Browns are turning to alternatives like Greg Newsome, a former first-round pick, and the impressive second-year cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. Newsome faced challenges in the recent game against the Broncos, earning a Pro Football Focus grade of 43.7 and struggling with a coverage mark of 34.1. The Browns’ secondary remains robust even without Ward, but safety Grant Delpit acknowledges the difficulty of not having Ward on the field.

The impact of injuries extends beyond Ward, with key offensive players like Nick Chubb, Deshaun Watson, and Jack Conklin already lost for the season. Defensive stalwart Myles Garrett faced concerns about a shoulder injury, but he was ready to play against the Rams, showcasing resilience and a swift recovery.

Despite the challenges posed by injuries, the Browns received a boost with the return of linebacker Anthony Walker, who was dealing with a hamstring injury. The team recognizes the significance of having players like Denzel Ward back on the field, with Greg Newsome referring to him as the best cornerback in the league and emphasizing the importance of his return when he is fully ready.

As the Browns navigate a season marked by injuries, the return of key defensive players, coupled with a cautious approach to Ward’s recovery, will play a pivotal role in determining the team’s success in the upcoming games.
