Lions Pro Bowl center carted to locker room with knee injury

The Detroit Lions, after an impressive start, face a setback as Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow suffers a knee injury in the second quarter against the New Orleans Saints. The injury, sustained while the Lions held a commanding 21-0 lead, has raised concerns about the team’s ability to secure its first division title in three decades.

Ragnow’s on-field assessment and subsequent need for assistance from the medical staff added to the worry, prompting his carting to the locker room for further evaluation. This injury compounds the Lions’ recent struggles, as they have been relying on backups in their offensive front over the past months. Although they saw the return of Jonah Jackson at left guard, the loss of Ragnow, a standout center, creates a significant void. Ragnow was ranked No. 2 at his position by Pro Football Focus leading into the weekend and has been a key player for years.

To address Ragnow’s absence, the Lions turn to Graham Glasgow, a capable backup, who started the game at right guard and has now shifted back to center. However, the challenge intensifies due to the absence of Halapoulivaati Vaitai, forcing the Lions to field rookie Colby Sorsdal at right guard. Sorsdal’s recent struggles in the guard position, leading to his benching on Thanksgiving, add an additional layer of concern for the Lions’ offensive line.

The timing of Ragnow’s injury is particularly unfortunate as the Lions aim to close out the season with their first division title in 30 years. The team must navigate these challenges, making strategic adjustments to compensate for the absence of their star center and to maintain their momentum in the quest for a division championship.
