Cowboys Could Sign Ex-$50 Million Star to ‘Cheaper Deal’ in 2024: Analyst

The Dallas Cowboys may find themselves in an advantageous position to acquire a former Super Bowl champion in 2024, particularly at the linebacker position, as per suggestions from Matt Holder of Bleacher Report. The Cowboys face a critical need at linebacker, especially with Leighton Vander Esch’s career cast into doubt following another season-ending neck injury.

With Vander Esch’s future uncertain, the Cowboys are exploring options in the free-agent market for linebackers. Despite Markquese Bell’s solid performance, particularly in coverage, Holder notes that his conversion from safety may leave the defense in need of a natural linebacker with strong run-defending capabilities.

Holder recommends the pursuit of Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive captain, Lavonte David, as a potential solution. David, known for his well-rounded skills, including strong run defense, could bring valuable experience to the Cowboys. Holder highlights David’s favorable grading in Pro Football Focus’ system against the run and suggests that, given his age and desire to play for a Super Bowl contender, he might be open to a reasonable deal.

Lavonte David has been a cornerstone of the Buccaneers’ defense since his 2012 draft, earning three All-Pro selections and a Pro Bowl bid in 2015. Despite being 33 years old, David remains a highly accomplished linebacker entering the final years of his career. His recent contract history indicates a willingness to play for smaller deals, making him a potentially cost-effective addition for the Cowboys.

Pro Football Focus underscores David’s continued high-level performance, with a 66.0 defensive grade and a 70.5 run defensive grade this season. These grades surpass those of the Cowboys’ current linebackers, including Vander Esch, making David an attractive prospect for Dallas.

Crucially, David’s durability over his 12-year career contrasts sharply with Vander Esch’s injury-prone history. While David missed just 12 possible games in 11 years, Vander Esch has been sidelined for 23 games in the past five seasons alone.

Considering Vander Esch’s uncertain future due to a recurring neck injury and the Cowboys’ linebacker depth concerns, Holder suggests that signing Lavonte David to a budget-friendly contract could be a prudent move for Dallas to strengthen their defense.
