The Miami Dolphins are actively exploring options to strengthen their defensive line, particularly focusing on defensive tackles in an effort to enhance the team’s depth. This move comes as the Dolphins enter a critical stretch of games in December, and the team recently worked out three veteran defensive tackles: Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis, and Justin Ellis.
The purpose of these workouts is not entirely clear, as it remains uncertain whether an injury prompted the evaluations or if the Dolphins are seeking to replace defensive linemen Byron Cowart and Brandon Pili on the practice squad. The team’s proactive approach indicates a strategic effort to address potential gaps in the defensive line’s depth chart.
Trevon Coley, a former standout from Miramar High and Florida Atlantic University, has an extensive NFL history, having been part of eight different teams since entering the league in 2016. He boasts 31 starts in 44 NFL games, contributing 100 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumbles recovered.
Carlos Davis, a nose tackle from Nebraska, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. After playing 12 games over a three-year period for the Steelers, he recently played for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL in 2023.
Justin Ellis, drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round in 2014, has accumulated significant experience in the NFL, with 54 starts in 117 games played for the Raiders, Ravens, and Giants. Despite spending training camp with the Atlanta Falcons, he did not secure a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad.
In addition to defensive tackles, the Dolphins are also exploring options to strengthen their linebacker unit following a knee injury to Jerome Baker. Reuben Foster, a former first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, is set to work out for the Dolphins on Wednesday. The team’s approach to evaluating potential additions underscores their commitment to maintaining a competitive and well-rounded roster as they navigate the challenges of the season.
