Zhou Guanyu faced challenges during the 2023 Formula 1 season, scoring points in only three races and accumulating a total of six points. Despite his struggles, Alfa Romeo has expressed confidence in Zhou by extending his contract for the upcoming 2024 season.
Alfa Romeo’s head of trackside engineering, Xevi Pujolar, shed light on the difficulties Zhou encountered during the 2023 season. Pujolar emphasized the team’s commitment to understanding and addressing these challenges to improve Zhou’s consistency.
“In some conditions, it’s been a struggle a bit more, and we’re trying to understand what we can give him with the car and how we can work with the tires, just to make sure he’s more consistent,” Pujolar explained. He noted that Zhou’s sensitivity to certain conditions affected his performance, and the team aims to make necessary adjustments for the upcoming season.
As Zhou enters his crucial third season in Formula 1, both he and the team are focused on eliminating mistakes. Pujolar highlighted the importance of a flawless performance in the 2024 season, stating, “There is no room for any small drop or mistake [next season].”
The 2024 season marks a new era for Alfa Romeo, as the team underwent changes following the conclusion of a five-year partnership with Sauber. The team will be officially renamed in December, signaling a fresh start for Zhou and Alfa Romeo in the upcoming season.
