These were Amanda Staveley’s thoughts about Anthony Gordon on Newcastle United’s Amazon docuseries almost a year ago.
At the time, the Toon were discussing a deal with Everton to bring the England U21 prodigy to St James’ Park, with Amazon capturing our desire to sign one of Eddie Howe’s top targets for 2023. Links to the winger were met with a mixed reception at first, with fans questioning his attitude, temperament, output, and the fee we were looking to pay. The sum, which might exceed £45 million, appeared to be a significant gamble at the time, especially given his struggles with fitness in the months after his signing.

He only scored one goal in 16 appearances last season, netting in our final-day tie against Chelsea. So far this season, he’s been one of the Premier League’s standout wingers, and he appears to be on the verge of making England’s roster after six goals and five assists in 13 league matches.
Staveley believes he can become “one of the best players in the league,” a claim for Amazon that was mocked by many opposition supporters this summer. But, just a few months and 11 goals later, he is one of the Premier League’s most dangerous and improving wingers.
