Good news: Texas Rangers confirm the signing of another star and added to to bolster bullpen for World Series champs

The Texas Rangers have made a significant move to fortify their bullpen, signing veteran reliever Kirby Yates to a one-year, $4.5 million contract. This acquisition aims to strengthen the pitching staff of the reigning World Series champions.

At 37 years old on opening day, Yates comes off an impressive 2022 season with the Atlanta Braves, where he contributed to the team’s MLB-best 104 wins. He posted a 7-2 record, recorded five saves, and maintained a solid 3.28 ERA. Despite the Braves falling short in the NL Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Yates showcased his skills in his postseason debut during Game 2, pitching a scoreless inning in a 5-4 Atlanta victory.

2022 Atlanta Braves Season in Review: Kirby Yates - Battery Power

Yates’ return to form with the Braves followed a challenging period in 2021 when he missed the entire season due to Tommy John surgery on his elbow. His resurgence in 2022 demonstrated his resilience and effectiveness on the mound.

Notably, Yates had a stellar 2019 season with the San Diego Padres, leading the MLB with 41 saves and earning an All-Star selection. His remarkable 1.19 ERA set a Padres record for pitchers with a minimum of 60 innings in a season.

The veteran reliever brings a wealth of experience to the Rangers, having made all 361 of his major league appearances in a relief role. Texas will be Yates’ sixth team in his career, showcasing his versatility and adaptability.

General Manager Chris Young had emphasized the need to bolster the bullpen during the offseason, recognizing its importance in the Rangers’ successful quest for their first World Series title in the previous year. Yates joins a mix of young middle relievers, including left-handers Brock Burke and Cody Bradford and right-hander Josh Sborz.

While José Leclerc emerged as the primary closer during the postseason, the status of Aroldis Chapman and Will Smith, both free agents, adds uncertainty to the bullpen. Yates, with his proven track record and impressive strikeout rate of 12.51 per nine innings, adds a reliable and experienced arm to the Rangers’ pitching arsenal as they aim to defend their championship in the upcoming season.
