Three things I want to see before the end of the Braves offseason.
After a slow start, the MLB offseason has gained momentum, reaching a notable point with the late-night acquisition of Juan Soto by the New York Yankees. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves, despite making significant moves to bolster their bullpen, still have work to do as they prepare for the 2024 season. General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is tirelessly addressing the remaining gaps in the roster, and while fans hope for another major move, there are three key things that need to be accomplished.
1. **Add at least one starting pitcher:**
The Braves are eagerly anticipated to enhance their starting rotation, either through trades or free agency. Notable names like Tyler Glasnow and Dylan Cease have been linked to the team, and various free-agent starting pitchers are still available. While blockbuster signings or trades might not be imminent due to financial constraints, adding at least one more starter, even if not a marquee name, is deemed crucial to stabilizing the rotation.
2. **Secure a lengthy contract extension:**
The Braves have excelled in securing surprise contract extensions during the offseason, and fans are hopeful for more. Max Fried, the team’s long-time ace, stands out as a prime candidate. Despite his significant contributions to the team, negotiations may be complex, given the history with Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson. Another player worth considering for an extension is A.J. Minter, a dependable set-up man entering the last year of his deal. Additional candidates for extensions include Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies, even though their contracts have several years left. Locking them up early could benefit the Braves in the long run.
3. **Acquire one more outfielder:**
While the Braves have made moves, such as acquiring Jarred Kelenic, to address their left field situation, there is a desire for further depth and insurance. Adding another veteran outfielder to the mix would provide additional options and flexibility. The uncertainty surrounding Vaughn Grissom’s roster status by Opening Day adds to the need for depth, making another experienced outfielder a valuable addition.
As the Braves navigate the remainder of the offseason, the focus is on strategic moves to strengthen the team’s starting rotation, secure key contract extensions, and ensure depth in the outfield. Anthopoulos’s patient and thoughtful approach to the offseason is expected to continue, with an emphasis on making the right moves at the right time to fortify the team for the challenges of the upcoming season.
