Lille plot move for Southampton 21-year-old ace

Sékou Mara (21) of Girondins de Bordeaux and current Southampton player could be interested in a loan move this winter to improve his chances of getting selected for the summer Olympic games, according to Foot Mercato.

Mara had a fantastic second half of the 21/22 Ligue 1 season, scoring five goals in the final seven games. An excellent run of form saw him earn his first call-up to the France under-21 squad, where he scored once. He then joined Southampton in a €11.5 million trade, playing 30 games in his first season and scoring two goals, both against Manchester City.

Lille, Marseille and several Bundesliga clubs all keeping an eye on Mara

After a promising debut season, there were high expectations for the striker to excel in England, particularly following Southampton’s relegation to the Championship. However, contrary to those hopes, Mara has struggled to secure playing time, failing to start a single game this season.

Given the circumstances, it seems beneficial for both Mara and the club to arrange a loan move during this winter transfer window. There’s no shortage of interest in Mara, with reports suggesting that Lille has shown interest in the Frenchman. Marseille and several Bundesliga clubs have also emerged as potential suitors. At 21 years old, Mara could serve as a valuable backup option for Jonathan David (23) at LOSC, as the team currently lacks another specialized striker in their squad.

Following an unsuccessful move to Werder Bremen last winter, this transfer window might offer Mara an opportunity to secure substantial playing time elsewhere.
