Braves Execute Strategic Moves, Acquire Fletcher and Stassi from Angels in Money-Juggling Maneuver”
In a calculated financial maneuver, the Atlanta Braves have made significant roster changes, acquiring infielder David Fletcher and catcher Max Stassi from the Los Angeles Angels. This transaction involved sending first baseman Evan White and left-handed reliever Tyler Thomas to the Angels, marking another chapter in the Braves’ ongoing effort to manage their budget.
This strategic move comes on the heels of earlier winter meetings where the Braves secured outfielder Jarred Kelenic and took on the contracts of Evan White and pitcher Marco Gonzales. Notably, during these meetings, the team swiftly traded Gonzales, along with cash, to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player yet to be named. Evan White, owed $17 million for the remaining two guaranteed seasons, has now been traded, signaling a potential trend in the team’s financial restructuring.
Max Stassi, who missed the entire last season attending to his prematurely born son, Jackson, is expected to be a trade candidate for the Braves. With Atlanta already fielding catchers Sean Murphy and Travis d’Arnaud, and Stassi holding a $7 million commitment for 2024, the team seems poised for further roster adjustments.
David Fletcher, due $12.5 million over the next two seasons, brings versatility to the Braves as a utility player. The 29-year-old infielder, known for his contact-oriented approach and defensive flexibility across second base, shortstop, and third base, is anticipated to be a valuable addition to the team. While not known for power-hitting, with 16 home runs in over 2,000 career plate appearances, Fletcher addresses Atlanta’s need for a utility player, particularly following Nicky Lopez’s departure to the Chicago White Sox in a previous trade for Aaron Bummer.
Evan White, originally signed to a six-year, $24 million contract by the Seattle Mariners, struggled offensively after winning a Gold Glove in his rookie season. This led to his demotion to Triple-A in 2021, and he has faced challenges returning to the major leagues.
Tyler Thomas, the left-handed reliever included in the trade, joins his fifth organization after stints with the Chicago Cubs, Texas, the New York Mets, and now Atlanta. In his six-season career since being drafted by the Cubs, Thomas has shown promise with an 11-15 record, a 3.66 ERA, and impressive strikeout numbers.
The Braves’ recent roster adjustments indicate a strategic financial approach, balancing talent acquisition with fiscal responsibility as they position themselves for future success.
