The Boston Celtics, despite their impressive performance this NBA season, are exploring potential trade targets to enhance their roster. Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston suggested four players that could be valuable additions to the Celtics, starting with former lottery pick Kelly Olynyk.
Beaston highlighted that the Celtics don’t necessarily need another star but could benefit from strategic additions. Olynyk, currently with the Utah Jazz, is a 47% three-point shooter who also contributes in rebounds and assists. While Olynyk’s $12.2 million salary might pose challenges in matching contracts, his skill set as a stretch-big could complement the Celtics.
Another option Beaston proposed is Talen Horton-Tucker, also on an expiring contract. Horton-Tucker brings championship experience and adds versatility to the Celtics’ roster. Beaston also mentioned Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale, players from the Brooklyn Nets, as potential targets. Both Finney-Smith and O’Neale provide valuable minutes and contribute to the team’s success.
While considering these trade targets, Beaston acknowledged that none of these players are expected to single-handedly lead the Celtics to victory with a 30-point performance. Instead, their contributions, especially in areas like three-point shooting and defense, could be valuable additions to Boston’s rotation.
Regarding Olynyk, there has been previous interest from the Celtics in reuniting with him. In the 2023 NBA Trade Deadline, the Celtics, along with the Miami Heat, expressed interest in acquiring Olynyk. The Celtics were reportedly looking at the possibility of bringing back the 6’11” floor-spacing big man who spent the first four seasons of his NBA career in Boston.
NBA insider Shams Charania also indicated that he expects the Celtics to be active in the trade market as they approach February, aiming to strengthen their bench rotation. Despite the Celtics’ current success, there is a recognition that additional reinforcements could enhance their chances of contending for an NBA title.
