Michigan football achieved a significant recruiting win by successfully flipping three-star defensive lineman Deyvid Palepale from USC on Saturday night. Palepale, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive tackle from Pennsylvania, had initially committed to USC, but Michigan remained a strong contender even before his commitment to the Trojans.
Michigan’s pursuit of Palepale indicated a positive trend, with the Wolverines appearing to be in a favorable position in the recruitment process. Despite USC initially securing his commitment, Michigan continued its efforts, and the narrative shifted after a disappointing defensive season for the Trojans contrasted with Michigan’s impressive 13-0 season and Big Ten title.
The official announcement of the flip came on Saturday night, marking Palepale as the 26th commitment in Michigan’s 2024 class. According to the 247 Sports composite rankings, Palepale is ranked No. 739 overall.
In an interview with The Wolverine, Palepale shared insights into the coaching staff’s vision for his role, noting that defensive coordinator Jesse Minter sees similarities between him and former Michigan football defensive tackle Mazi Smith. Minter also drew parallels to Kris Jenkins, describing Palepale as a mix of both. Palepale’s playing style aligns well with Michigan’s defensive scheme, particularly in the role of a nose tackle.
“(Minter) was telling me that he sees another Mazi Smith in me. He also sees some Kris Jenkins. He thinks I’m a mix of both. My style of play fits in well with their scheme. It meant a lot for him to compare me to them because those dudes are beasts. My favorite team is the Cowboys, so to be compared to him is crazy. Then you have The Mutant. It’s crazy.”
Palepale’s commitment adds depth to Michigan’s defensive line for the 2024 class, joining Ted Hammond and Manuel Beigel as true defensive linemen. While some may overlook Palepale’s three-star status, Michigan football has a track record of excelling in player evaluations, suggesting that the coaching staff sees significant potential in the newly acquired recruit. This successful flip underscores Michigan’s prowess in recruiting and their ability to secure impactful additions to their program.
