According to journalist Alan Nixon, Southampton are interested in loaning out Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell.
Southampton now rank fourth in the Championship table, although they have conceded the most goals of any team in the top eight. As a result, fixing this issue may be a top priority ahead of the January transfer window. Jan Bednarek and Manchester City loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis have been Russell Martin’s go-to defensive duo, however they do have Jack Stephens and Mason Holgate in reserve should they need to rotate and replace due to injuries.
However, Nixon’s latest report implies that the Saints manager is dissatisfied with his squad, with his club pursuing a loan deal for Leeds United centre-back Cresswell. According to The Athletic, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke expects the 21-year-old to stay at Elland Road, although Nixon previously indicated that another Championship club is interested, with Middlesbrough keen to address their defensive weaknesses next month.
A great signing
Cresswell has played in both the Championship with Leeds United and Millwall, as well as intermittently in the Premier League during the Whites’ recent tenure there. As a result, if the deal is completed, he would be an excellent addition for Southampton.
He is said to be looking for playing time, which appears to be becoming increasingly scarce at Elland Road. As a result, a loan move away from the club is likely at this point. It remains to be seen whether he will join Southampton, Middlesbrough, or another club.
With only two senior fit centre-backs at their disposal, Middlesbrough are desperate for numbers at the back, and the Saints will have their job cut out to contend with Michael Carrick’s side. However, given Southampton’s position at the top of the table, this could play a role in Cresswell’s choice.
