‘Absolutely baffling’… Sky Sports pundit stunned after what Dermot Gallagher has said about Cristian Romero’s tackle yesterday

Dermot Gallagher stated that Cristian Romero’s challenge on Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson was not an obvious red card, leaving Stephen Warnock astonished.

The veteran Premier League referee discussed the Tottenham Hotspur defender’s harsh challenge on Callum Wilson on Sky Sports. Tottenham defeated Eddie Howe’s side 4-1, due to goals from Richarlison, Destiny Udogie, and Son Heung-Min.

Spurs were on their way to an easy victory, leading 3-0 in the 81st minute. However, Romero was fortunate to remain on the field after a reckless challenge on Wilson.

The late arrival of the Argentine defender resulted in his studs landing on Wilson’s ankle.

Referee Chris Kavanagh immediately issued a yellow card to Romero, and the VAR reviewed the incident before agreeing with the on-field decision.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has now declared that he believes the correct call was made, much to Stephen Warnock’s chagrin.

Warnock stunned after what Gallagher has said about Romero’s tackle

Gallagher claimed on Sky Sports News today that the tackle did not stand out to him as an apparent red card.

“It didn’t leap out to me as a red card but a lot of people have said since it is,” he added. “It’s quite amazing how everyone has gone red card challenges now.”

“We’ve had 31 red cards after 14 rounds of football, only 30 last season altogether.”

“I think that’s what people say, he does a double-take,” he continued. It is not prudent. I’m not sure why people do this.

“As I say, it’s amazing how the red cards are mounting up and people want more and more.”

And it’s safe to say that Gallagher’s remarks on the event did not sit well with Warnock.

“I’m absolutely stunned you said that wasn’t a red card,” Warnock replied. “That it doesn’t leap out at you as a red card.”

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about. When I saw that, I thought, ‘How has he not gone for that?’

“How can you not see that as a blatant error?” It’s beyond comprehension how it isn’t a red card.”
