Rotherham Football Club has brought in Leam Richardson, the former Wigan Athletic manager, as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half year contract. The 44-year-old steps in to replace Matt Taylor, who was relieved of his duties last month.
Currently positioned second from the bottom in the Championship, Rotherham has amassed 13 points from 20 games and faces an eight-point gap from safety.
Richardson previously guided Wigan to the League One title in the 2021-22 season, edging past Rotherham, but faced dismissal in November of that same year due to a sluggish start to the subsequent season.
The decision to appoint Richardson followed a rigorous and extensive interview process, involving high-quality candidates, where Rotherham highlighted his credentials and outlined his vision for the club’s project.
It’s noteworthy that Richardson’s designation is head coach, a departure from the managerial title held by his predecessor, Matt Taylor.
Taylor assumed the reins at New York Stadium in October 2022, succeeding long-serving manager Paul Warne, who departed for League One Derby County.
Last season, he kept Exeter in the Championship, but he was fired in November after only two wins in their first 16 league games, only to be replaced by Bristol Rovers at the start of the month.
If Rotherham are to avoid relegation, Richardson will look to improve their dreadful away form.
Since beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane 13 months ago, the Millers have not won a game on the road.
