The Cleveland Browns have signed strong safety Grant Delpit to a three-year, $36 million contract extension, with just over $23 million guaranteed, according to reports. The deal is structured as a virtually two-year contract, with the guaranteed money covering the first two years. This team-friendly agreement provides the Browns with financial flexibility, as some analysts believe Delpit could have commanded a more lucrative deal in free agency.
Delpit has played a crucial role in the Browns’ 2023 season, contributing significantly to the team’s efforts despite injuries to key offensive players like Deshaun Watson and Nick Chubb. As the anchor of the Browns’ defense, Delpit leads the team in various categories, including tackles. In the 2023 season, he has recorded 80 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, and one interception in 13 games.
Grant Delpit missed his entire rookie season due to an Achilles injury but has since been a durable and valuable asset for the Browns. He played the entire 2022 season, starting in all 16 games, and has started every game for Cleveland in the current season.
With this contract extension, Delpit becomes the 12th-highest paid safety in the NFL, earning an average annual value of $12 million if the Browns guarantee the entire contract. At 25 years old, Delpit is expected to be in the prime of his career, making the extension a valuable move for Cleveland moving forward.
