Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes bid farewell to rival Josh Allen in an uncomfortable manner on Sunday following the Chiefs’ loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Bills handed the Chiefs their fifth loss of the season in a 20-17 match at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. This defeat marked the Chiefs’ fourth loss in their last six games.
Tensions ran high for Mahomes in the final minute of the game due to a late offensive offsides call against Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney. With Kansas City trailing by three points, and a potential go-ahead touchdown by Toney nullified by the penalty, Mahomes was visibly frustrated (watch the video here).
Even after the game ended, Mahomes seemed preoccupied with the penalty when he encountered Allen. While embracing, the reigning MVP vented about the call, making for an awkward moment for the victorious QB.
Mahomes expressed his frustration, calling it “the most unbelievable call I’ve ever witnessed. Offensive offsides… absolutely awful,” with explicit language (profanity has been altered).
Both Mahomes and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid carried their on-field frustrations into their subsequent press conferences, vehemently criticizing the officials for their crucial offsides call.
Mahomes completed 25 out of 43 passes for 271 yards, securing one touchdown and enduring one interception. Meanwhile, Allen concluded the game with 23 completions out of 42 attempts, amassing 233 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Additionally, the Bills’ quarterback showcased his rushing abilities, gaining 32 yards and scoring one touchdown on 10 carries.
The Chiefs’ defeat dropped their record to 8-5, significantly denting their chances of clinching the top seed in the AFC. Conversely, the Bills improved their playoff prospects, reaching a 7-6 record.
