According to the Irish Independent, Charlton Athletic’s loan of James Abankwah will be terminated early.
In the summer transfer window, Charlton Athletic signed teenage defender Abankwah from Italian club Udinese. He primarily played youth football for the Serie A club, but he has made two first-team appearances since signing from St. Pat’s in Ireland.
However, the relocation to The Valley has not gone as planned. He played two games at right-back in September and hasn’t appeared in a League One matchday squad since.
In reality, his lone appearance since then was a 1-1 tie in the FA Cup first round against Cray Valley Paper Mills.
With the January transfer window approaching, the unavoidable has occurred. According to the Irish Independent, the Republic of Ireland youth international is poised to be returned by parent club Udinese following a difficult half-season stay with Charlton Athletic.
A loan to another British team or Serie B side could follow for the young 19-year-old.
A new move awaits?
Abankwah emerged as a top Irish player with St. Pat’s, and his well-deserved move to Italy with Udinese demonstrates the skill he possesses. Finally, this Charlton Athletic spell has been difficult, and it’s best for everyone that it ends in January. It will leave the Addicks without a right-back and a centre-back option for the remainder of the season, but given how little Abankwah played, time will tell if Michael Appleton sees a cause to bring in a replacement for the rest of the season.
Abankwah will be hoping for additional opportunities at his next club if he is loaned out again.
Time will tell how his condition develops, but leaving The Valley is undoubtedly for the best.
