Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal, revealing the news to ESPN on Wednesday night. This comes at a crucial time as the Longhorns gear up for the Sugar Bowl against the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoffs.
Expressing his regret about missing the opportunity to be part of the College Football Playoff, Murphy conveyed his deep investment in the team and the collective effort they’ve put into the season. Departing at this juncture is undoubtedly a challenging decision for the redshirt freshman quarterback.
With Murphy stepping away, the backup role for the Sugar Bowl will be assumed by true freshman Arch Manning, who will support starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. Manning’s inclusion as the backup quarterback is noteworthy, as it positions him as a potential starter for the Longhorns in case of any contingencies involving Ewers. Murphy showcased his capabilities during the season, particularly when Ewers was sidelined due to injury. The redshirt freshman quarterback contributed to two victories for the Longhorns, securing a 35-6 win against the BYU Cougars and a 33-30 overtime triumph over the Kansas State Wildcats. Throughout his appearances, Murphy completed 34 of 62 passes for 418 yards, registering three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Given Murphy’s talent and potential, he is expected to be a highly sought-after player in the transfer portal. Numerous teams are in search of quarterbacks, including notable programs like the Syracuse Orange, Louisville Cardinals, Florida State Seminoles, and Duke Blue Devils, among others. Murphy, originally from Gardena, California, entered the college football scene as a four-star recruit in the class of 2022.
