Sunderland closing in on appointment of former Rangers and QPR boss as Tony Mowbray successor

Sunderland have named Michael Beale as Tony Mowbray’s replacement. Sunderland are close to appointing Mick Beale as their new manager.

Beale has been unemployed since leaving Rangers, but he has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the race to succeed Tony Mowbray, and he could be in the stands when Sunderland meet Bristol City on Saturday.

Mike Dodds will be in charge for that game, and he is likely to play an important role in the coaching setup after Beale takes over. Beale is a former Chelsea and Liverpool youth coach who rose through the ranks as Steven Gerrard’s assistant at Rangers and, later, Aston Villa before striking out on his own at QPR.

After impressing at QPR, Beale turned down an offer from Wolves before joining Rangers. He left following a poor start to the current season, but Sunderland are claimed to have been impressed by his coaching abilities and track record in player development.

Beale’s first game will most likely be the visit of Coventry City to the Stadium of Light next Saturday.
