Breaking News: Texas Longhorns confirm another top is leaving Texas

Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy has decided to enter the transfer portal, missing the opportunity to join the team in the College Football Playoffs as they face the Washington Huskies in the Sugar Bowl. Despite expressing regret about not being part of the playoff journey, Murphy cited the difficulty of walking away, given his strong investment in the team and the collective effort put in throughout the season.

In Murphy’s absence from the College Football Playoff, the role of backing up starting quarterback Quinn Ewers will fall to true freshman Arch Manning. This development is noteworthy as it opens up an avenue for Manning to potentially start for the Longhorns in the absence of Ewers, adding an interesting dynamic to the team’s quarterback situation.

Redshirt freshman Murphy made significant contributions to the Longhorns this season, starting two games when Ewers was sidelined due to injury. Notably, he led Texas to victories against the BYU Cougars with a score of 35-6 and the Kansas State Wildcats in a 33-30 overtime win. In his appearances, Murphy completed 34 of 62 passes for 418 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

As Maalik Murphy enters the transfer portal, he is expected to be in high demand, given his status as a four-star recruit from the class of 2022. Numerous teams, including the Syracuse Orange, Louisville Cardinals, Florida State Seminoles, Duke Blue Devils, and others, are actively seeking quarterback talent. Murphy, originally from Gardena, California, brings a valuable skill set that makes him an attractive prospect for teams in need of a quarterback, and his decision is likely to garner attention in the transfer market.
