Andy Hinchcliffe praised Brandon Thomas-Asante’s “outstanding” goal that brought West Brom back into the game against Stoke City.
Prior to his moment of brilliance in the 35th minute of Sunday’s (17 December) Championship match, Thomas-Asante had struggled to get involved.
Lynden Gooch’s fortuitous opener was cancelled out by the 24-year-old’s low strike right inside the Stoke penalty area. “This is such a good strike,” Hinchcliffe said during the match’s live coverage on Sky Sports [17 December, 12:37pm].
“He’s backing away from goal, the ball is dropping over his shoulder – what a sweet strike.”
“The finish is superb. He hasn’t got many touches, but that was a strong one on the turn. The keeper has no chance.”
Out of nowhere
West Bromwich Albion struggled to get going in the first half of their match against Stoke City, and fans were feeling impatient by the time Thomas-Asante delivered a moment of brilliance.
Thomas-Asante had only had eight touches of the ball up to that time, which was five fewer than any other home player [WhoScored].
Not only was the Albion centre-forward unable to get on the ball, but his movement irritated his teammates on several occasions.
However, every good striker only needs one chance to shift the narrative, which Thomas-Asante accomplished with his well-placed low finish.
Darnell Furlong deserves credit for keeping the attack going while Stoke attempted to clear the ball for a goal-kick, and Thomas-Asante was alert to the loose ball after Okay Yokuslu’s original shot was blocked.
That was Thomas-Asante’s second goal in three games, so ideally this is the beginning of a hot streak for the 24-year-old.
