The Oklahoma Sooners have made a significant addition to their football roster with the acquisition of running back Sam Franklin from the transfer portal. Franklin, a former star running back for the UT Martin Skyhawks, has committed to joining the Sooners, adding depth and talent to their backfield.
This move follows closely on the heels of Oklahoma securing the commitment of former Purdue Boilermakers wide receiver Deion Burks. The combination of Franklin and Burks enhances the offensive firepower for the Sooners as they prepare for the 2024 season.
Franklin’s arrival is particularly noteworthy as the Sooners had recently lost three running backs—Daylan Smothers, Marcus Major, and Tawee Walker—to the transfer portal. Despite these departures, the Sooners retain key players like Gavin Sawchuck, Jovantae Barnes, and four-star recruit Taylor Tatum in their backfield.
In the 2023 season, Sawchuck led the Sooners in rushing with 610 yards and eight touchdowns on 105 carries. Barnes also contributed with 140 rushing yards and a touchdown on 37 carries.
Franklin, coming off an impressive season with the Skyhawks, recorded 1,378 yards and 11 touchdowns on 223 carries in 2023. While he may not have to shoulder as much of the ground game workload with the Sooners, his addition is expected to significantly contribute to Oklahoma’s offense. The team ranked 29th nationally in rushing yards per game in 2023 with 180.8 yards, and Franklin’s versatility and skills make him a valuable asset as the Sooners look to maintain a potent rushing attack in the upcoming season.
