The Seattle Kraken acquired Tomas Tatar from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft due to Tatar’s disappointing performance at the start of the season. Tatar, who had signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche, managed only one goal and eight assists in 27 games as the team experimented with its line combinations early in the season.
Following Tatar’s departure, the Avalanche freed up an extra $1.5 million, increasing their available cap space to $4,825,000. Recent discussions have centered around two players: Sean Monahan and Morgan Frost. Monahan carries a $1.985 million cap hit, while Frost’s cap hit amounts to $2.1 million.
While I prefer the Avalanche sticking with their current set of forwards, it might be prudent to pursue additional talent, given their financial flexibility.
Frost, who plays for the Philadelphia Flyers, has accumulated three goals and five assists in the ongoing season, averaging 15:18 of Time on Ice across 20 games. He had a breakout season in 2022-23, registering 19 goals and 27 assists in 81 games, with a career faceoff percentage of 46.7 percent.
Monahan, with nine goals and 10 assists in 30 games this season, excels in various aspects, notably on the power play and penalty kill. Adding Monahan to bolster the penalty kill alongside Logan O’Connor, who has been performing exceptionally well on that unit, could benefit the Avalanche.
Enhancing the team’s goal-scoring abilities is a priority for the Colorado Avalanche. There’s a desire to see the team acquire defensive support and players adept at not just defending but also creating offensive opportunities. These two potential additions could offer substantial rewards with relatively low risk.
As of now, the Colorado Avalanche lead their division with 40 points from 19 wins in 31 games.
