Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and outside linebacker Danielle Hunter are both projected to sign lucrative contracts in 2024 due to their exceptional performances during the season.
Despite suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 8 and entering the next season at 36 years old, Kirk Cousins is projected to sign a two-year contract worth $60 million, according to Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus.
Danielle Hunter, who is having a career year, is also expected to sign a substantial new contract. Spielberger predicts that Hunter will sign a three-year deal worth $65 million, with $40 million in guaranteed money. Hunter has been a standout player in the Vikings’ defense, showcasing his abilities with 21 tackles for loss and a career-high 15.5 sacks through 14 games in the 2023 season.
While these projections indicate financial success for Cousins and Hunter, it remains to be seen whether Hunter will sign the deal with the Vikings or explore opportunities elsewhere. Hunter previously sought a new contract or a trade during the summer before renegotiating the final year of his current deal, which guaranteed him $17 million.
Despite turning 30 years old next season, Hunter’s stellar performance has garnered significant attention, making him a desirable asset for multiple NFL teams. The Vikings, facing a potential bidding war for Hunter’s services, might find it challenging to retain him if his stellar play continues.
As of now, the Vikings are projected to have just under $38.1 million in available salary cap space for the next offseason, according to Spotrac. However, the impending contracts for Cousins and potentially Hunter will impact the team’s financial flexibility.
