Gary Neville delivers one-word verdict on Moises Caicedo’s horrible tackle on Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United was fortunate to avoid a catastrophic injury early in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final meeting with Chelsea.

Eddie Howe’s team was eliminated from the competition on penalties at Stamford Bridge, but they should have been playing against 10 men for the whole of the game. Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was booked early for a push from behind on Anthony Gordon. The incident left the 22-year-old in a heap, and Ecuador international Jarred Gillett was shown a yellow card.

However, replays revealed that it was a heinous tackle. Caicedo rakes his studs down the back of Gordon’s leg and should have been sent off. Fortunately for the former Brighton player, there was no VAR to evaluate the event, therefore he was not sent off.

Caicedo’s yellow card would very certainly have been escalated to a red card if VAR had been used in the Carabao Cup quarter final. That is Gary Neville’s opinion, as expressed on his official X account in response to the challenge.
