According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Detroit Lions are set to add cornerback Craig James to their practice squad, although the team itself has not officially confirmed this transaction. As of now, there is no known corresponding move reported, necessitating one as the Lions have already reached the maximum limit of 16 players on their practice squad.
James entered the NFL as an undrafted prospect in 2018 and has since had stints with three different teams. Initially part of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad during his rookie year, he made a few appearances on special teams towards the end of the season. After being released the following year, he was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played under current Lions special teams coach Dave Fipp.
During his tenure in Philadelphia spanning three seasons, James participated in 18 games with one start. In 2019, he notably contributed significantly to the Eagles’ special teams unit, recording 237 snaps—ranking fifth-highest on the team.
His role primarily focused on serving as a gunner for the Eagles, a position that holds significance for the Lions. Recently, the Lions shifted Jerry Jacobs to a specialized role in special teams, with head coach Dan Campbell commending Jacobs for his skills as both a gunner and a jammer.
However, Jacobs suffered an injury against the Denver Broncos, the severity of which remains unknown, and he did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. The Lions’ interest in James, along with their consideration of two other cornerbacks who visited the team this week, suggests uncertainty regarding Jacobs’ status.
Moreover, James also has experience playing on defense. Earlier this year, he assumed a notable role for the New York Jets, playing 41 snaps in a game against the Eagles, where he showcased a strong performance. In that game, he prevented any completed passes, secured a pass breakup, and earned an impressive 78.9 overall grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF).
This post will be updated once the signing is confirmed officially, alongside any announced corresponding moves by the Lions.
