Despite missing out on securing former Orix Buffaloes standout Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency, the New York Yankees are still positioned to make significant moves to bolster their roster. Yamamoto, who was a top priority for the Yankees and various other MLB clubs, ultimately chose the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving the Yankees to reconsider their options, particularly in addressing their starting rotation.
With the need for additional arms in the rotation, the Yankees are exploring various possibilities, and one potential solution is a reunion with former Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery, as reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Rosenthal stated, “As it stands, they need at least one more starter after failing to land Yamamoto, and at least internally have discussed a reunion with Montgomery. They also could seek to load up the bullpen. As competitive as their division is, as disappointing as they were last season, they cannot stop.”
Jordan Montgomery, originally drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft, made his debut with the team in 2017, accumulating valuable experience over the course of his tenure. Despite being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022, he remained a notable figure in the Yankees’ plans. Montgomery then found himself with the Texas Rangers, the eventual 2023 World Series champions, following a mid-season trade by the Cardinals.
The Yankees, acknowledging their need for pitching depth and Montgomery’s consistent performance throughout his career, are considering a move to bring back the left-handed pitcher. Having spent the first five-plus years of his career in New York, Montgomery could provide stability and an improvement to the team’s rotation.
While the disappointment of missing out on Yamamoto lingers, the Yankees appear determined to address their roster needs promptly. With Montgomery emerging as a viable option, a reunion with the reliable lefty could be in the cards for the Yankees as they strive to strengthen their pitching staff and remain competitive in a challenging division. As the offseason unfolds, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Yankees actively pursuing and securing the services of Jordan Montgomery.
