Key Charlton Athletic figure offers concerning insight into contract talks with key duo

Michael Appleton takes command of Charlton Athletic for the first time in January, and the team is hoping to make some progress. The Addicks are currently tenth in League One, eight points out of the play-offs.
However, there are doubts over the futures of important players Blackett-Taylor and Dobson as the new year approaches. Both are out of contract at the conclusion of the season, and the latter is being pursued by other teams.

Now, technical director Andy Scott has told the South London Press that clarity on both of their fates is no closer. On Blackett-Taylor, he stated:

“We made an offer to Corey and they made it clear they are going to sit tight for a little bit and see what happens. We are no closer to him signing a deal but also no closer to him leaving either.

“We’re anticipating some interest in him, definitely,” he later added. “But that doesn’t mean we are going to settle for losing him. We’ve got to see how it pans out and be prepared for every scenario.

Captain Dobson appears to be in the same boat. Scott claims that his agent has received ‘little back’ from Charlton Athletic’s two contract offers.

“We have offered two contracts to George and had little back from his agent. It seems like he’s going to go into the January window and see what options are out there.”

Scott then went to say:

“I think both players want to see what plans we’ve got for January and what targets we will bring in to help us. That will give them an indication of how ambitious we can be – that might help persuade them to sign their contracts.”

Fingers crossed

To get into the play-offs, Charlton Athletic will need to make a strong January transfer window. Despite their solid league position, they’re now eight points out of the top six with plenty of time left in the season.

Dobson and Blackett-Taylor will also be vital in bridging that gap, so keeping their services will be critical. As Scott suggests, some eye-catching early business can demonstrate the Valley’s intentions, persuading them to write new deals rather than pursue new chances elsewhere.

However, with both Charlton Athletic players leaving their options open, only time will tell how their circumstances play out.
