Following his decision to depart the Texas Longhorns and enter the transfer portal, quarterback Maalik Murphy has found a new home at Duke University. Reports indicate that Murphy, a promising talent in college football, has chosen to join the Duke football program in North Carolina.
Since entering the transfer portal, Murphy garnered significant attention from other notable football programs such as USC and Georgia, both expressing interest in recruiting him. Baylor, South Carolina, and Oregon State were also reportedly in the running. Ultimately, however, the appeal of playing for the Duke Blue Devils and having the opportunity to make an immediate impact on the team proved irresistible for Murphy.
Although a formal announcement is pending, it is reported that Murphy and Duke football have a “verbal commitment.” According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Murphy, with three years of eligibility remaining, will be eligible to play for the Blue Devils right away, providing first-year head coach Manny Diaz with a crucial building block as he begins his tenure.
Thamel shared in his report, “Sources: Former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has verbally committed to Duke. A formal announcement is expected soon. He’ll be immediately eligible with three years remaining, giving first-year coach Manny Diaz a key building block to start his tenure.”
In his 2023 season with Texas, Murphy accumulated 477 yards and three touchdowns, along with three interceptions, in seven appearances, including two starts in injury relief. With Riley Leonard’s recent transfer to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Murphy is poised to take on a significant role at Duke, offering him ample opportunities to showcase his talents.
The hope is that Murphy will thrive in his new role with Duke football, potentially leading the Blue Devils to new heights under the guidance of coach Manny Diaz.
