Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield has addressed recent speculation about his potential return to Tampa Bay for the 2024 season. Following reports over the weekend indicating the team’s interest in retaining him, Mayfield expressed a positive outlook after the Buccaneers’ decisive 30-12 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Mayfield, in a statement shared by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, conveyed his eagerness to remain with the Buccaneers: “I would love to be here. It’s a great city, great group of guys, great organization, but winning ball games takes care of that. We’ll have that discussion after the year.”
This marks Mayfield’s inaugural season with the Buccaneers, having previously played for the Cleveland Browns (selected as the number one overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft), Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Rams.
Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles commended Mayfield’s performance, particularly in December, stating, “He’s been outstanding. That’s what you want from your quarterback in December. Everybody knows each other’s plays right about now. But when you’re trying to make a push and your quarterback is playing great, it gives you a chance.”
In the recent victory against the Jaguars, Mayfield demonstrated his prowess by throwing for 283 yards and two touchdowns, contributing to the Buccaneers’ four-game winning streak. With an 8-7 record, the Buccaneers currently lead the NFC South and control the NFC’s fourth playoff spot. They have upcoming games against division rivals, the New Orleans Saints (7-8) at home and the Carolina Panthers (2-13) on the road.
In contrast, the Jaguars are facing challenges, having suffered their fourth consecutive loss, including a home defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals on December 4th, impacting their quest for the AFC’s top seed.
