IN RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSY — Veteran Tyrod Taylor has taken Tommy DeVito’s spot as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants.
Coach Brian Daboll made the announcement on Wednesday, citing Taylor’s performance in a Christmas Day loss in Philadelphia as motivation. At MetLife Stadium on Sunday, the 34-year-old will start his fourth game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams (8-7) in the NFL.
DeVito, a New Jersey native and undrafted rookie free agent, has started the last six games for the Giants (5-10) and guided them to a three-game winning streak that put them just one win away from a postseason berth earlier in the month.
But the Giants lost to the Eagles 33-25 on Monday, ending their hopes of making the playoffs, after being defeated by the Saints in New Orleans on December 17.
In the second half of New York’s game against Philadelphia, with the team trailing 20-3, Taylor—who had started three games—replaced DeVito. In October, Daniel Jones had suffered a neck injury. In the fourth quarter, he ignited the offense and found Darius Slayton for a 69-yard touchdown pass to pull the Giants within 30-25.
After breaking four ribs against the Jets in late October, Taylor was replaced by DeVito. In the closing minute of the game, Taylor also moved New York into Philadelphia territory before being intercepted in the end zone on the last play.
Because quarterback enjoys chicken parmesan sandwiches, DeVito earned the moniker “Tommy Cutlets.” In eight games, including six starts, he completed 112 of 176 passes for 1,087 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. 36 times, he was fired.
After Jones suffered an ACL tear against the Raiders on November 5, while making his comeback from a neck injury, DeVito, who had gone through training camp, began the season on the practice squad, was added to the active roster, and began to play.
With seventy-six yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, Taylor has completed 66 of 107 throws.
