Justin Jefferson expressed his support for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, emphasizing his positive impact on and off the field. Cousins, who is set to become a free agent after this season, has been with the Vikings for six years.
Jefferson, when asked about Cousins’ future with the team, stated that he believes the statistics and on-field performance speak for themselves. Despite Cousins’ age and recent season-ending Achilles tear in Week 8, Jefferson indicated that he would advocate for Cousins to be retained by the Vikings.
The speculation about Cousins’ future began in the offseason when the team and the veteran quarterback couldn’t reach an agreement on a contract extension. However, the recent struggles of the Vikings’ rotating quarterbacks in Cousins’ absence, including injuries to Jaren Hall and Josh Dobbs, have highlighted the value of Cousins to the team.
Dobbs, who stepped in after Cousins’ injury, had some successful outings but also faced challenges, throwing two touchdowns to five interceptions in the next three games. This inconsistency led to uncertainty about the quarterback situation for the remaining two weeks of the season.
Despite the challenges, Jefferson voiced his appreciation for Cousins, acknowledging the leadership, game control, and connection they share on and off the field. He highlighted the positive impact Cousins has had in the locker room, emphasizing the intangible aspects of his leadership that might not be visible to outsiders.
While the future remains uncertain, Jefferson’s endorsement of Cousins adds a voice of support for the veteran quarterback’s potential return to the Minnesota Vikings.
