The move frees up a roster slot, which might be filled by a specific defensive tackle.
The Buffalo Bills have officially released Germain Ifedi, the experienced offensive lineman, reducing their active roster to 52 players. This move opens up a roster spot, potentially for defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, provided he is fit to play in the upcoming game.
Ifedi, aged 29, joined the Bills towards the end of August after spending the preseason with the Detroit Lions. He was released by Detroit on August 27, and Buffalo signed him just three days following his release. Despite his signing, Ifedi did not participate in any games for the Bills during this season. He remained inactive for all the games, with Ryan Van Demark taking up the role of the team’s swing tackle.
Following Ifedi’s release, there’s speculation that DaQuan Jones, a 32-year-old defensive tackle, may soon find himself added to the active roster. Jones started the season strongly, making an impact with 10 tackles, 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and five hits on the quarterback in the first four games. Unfortunately, he suffered a pectoral muscle injury during Buffalo’s fifth game, a challenging match in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars, wherein the team also lost the All-Pro linebacker Matt Milano.
Should the Bills believe Jones is ready for the upcoming game, they have until 4 p.m. EST on Saturday to include him in their 53-man roster from the injured reserve list. In Ifedi’s case, he needs to pass through waivers before the Bills can consider signing him to their practice squad. Typically, as a vested veteran, Ifedi would have the freedom to sign immediately. However, due to the NFL’s trade deadline being past, even vested veterans are subjected to the waiver process.
