The Iowa football program is facing decisions from players considering whether to return for a sixth year or enter the professional football ranks. Linebacker Jay Higgins, who recently announced his decision to return to the Hawkeyes, has been actively encouraging teammates, including defenders Nick Jackson and Sebastian Castro, to follow suit.
Higgins, seen as a recruiting force for Iowa, has been persistent in trying to persuade Jackson and Castro to come back for another season. The hope is that a domino effect could occur, leading to the return of the top three tacklers for Iowa next season.
Castro expressed the dilemma of deciding between pursuing a career in the NFL or returning to play another year of college football. He acknowledges the appeal of both options, citing the opportunity to be around the Iowa community, grow as a player, and enjoy the college football environment.
While Castro has not yet made his decision, he mentioned that he plans to make the announcement sometime after the upcoming game. Jackson, who recently received approval from the NCAA to play for an extra year, expressed gratitude for the unexpected option and emphasized the significance of the upcoming game.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz acknowledges the difficulty of such decisions and advises players to take their time in making choices. He emphasizes that players should be fully invested in whatever step they choose, whether it’s staying for another year or pursuing a professional career. Ferentz also emphasizes that he respects and supports each player’s decision, recognizing that they are Hawkeyes for life, regardless of their choices.
